Most prop firms were built for a human clicking buy and sell on MetaTrader. If you trade with a bot, a script, or now an AI agent, that's a problem — MT4/MT5 Expert Advisors work, but there's usually no first-party API from the firm itself, which means your automation talks to the broker platform, not to the firm's actual account data.
Here's what API access at a prop firm should look like for algorithmic trading, and how WICK FUNDED's setup compares.
What "API access" actually means at a prop firm
There's a real difference between these three things, and firms often blur it in marketing:
- Platform-level automation — Expert Advisors on MT4/MT5, or cBots on cTrader. Mature and well-documented, but it's the platform's API, not the firm's. It can't tell you, for example, your current consistency-rule exposure in a structured way.
- A first-party account API — a REST API built and documented by the firm itself, covering account state, positions, orders and rules data specific to that firm's account model. This is rare; most firms stop at platform-level automation.
- A native AI-agent connection (MCP) — a one-click, OAuth-based way for an AI model (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor) to read and act on your account directly, without you writing a custom integration. This is rarer still.
What to check before building a bot or agent on a prop firm account
- Is there an OpenAPI spec or equivalent documentation, or are you reverse-engineering requests?
- Is personal automation explicitly allowed in the firm's rules? Some firms restrict or ban EAs/bots entirely.
- Does the API expose rules data (drawdown remaining, consistency rule status) or just raw trade execution?
- Is there a sandbox or demo mode to test an integration before it touches a real evaluation account?
How WICK FUNDED does it (simulated)
WICK FUNDED exposes a public, documented first-party REST API (OpenAPI 3.1 spec at /api/v1/openapi), covering account state, positions, pending orders, trade journal, consistency status, symbols and candle data — plus endpoints to open, close, modify and cancel trades programmatically.
On top of that, WICK runs a native one-click MCP server (OAuth-based) that lets Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor connect directly to your account and read or trade on it without a custom integration — a native one-click MCP connection is still rare among prop firms. Full docs: wickfunded.com/mcp.
Personal automation is explicitly allowed at WICK. This applies across the 2-Step Challenge, 1-Step Challenge, and Instant Funding tracks — the API and MCP connection work the same way regardless of which track you're on.
Risk rules apply identically whether a human or a bot is placing the trades — static max drawdown, daily drawdown and the consistency rule all still govern the account. See drawdown explained for the mechanics your automation needs to respect.
All trading, automated or manual, happens on a simulated account. No real capital is exposed to the market through the API or MCP connection.
API and automation support across the industry (general, last checked October 2026)
| Firm type | Automation support |
|---|---|
| MetaTrader-based firms (FTMO and others) | Expert Advisors / cBots via the platform — mature, no first-party firm API |
| First-party API firms (WICK FUNDED and a small number of others) | Direct account-level REST API, documented |
| Native AI-agent (MCP) connection | Rare — WICK FUNDED is among the first to offer a one-click OAuth MCP |
| Track-record incubators (e.g., Darwinex Zero) | Not a challenge model — you trade your own strategy and a track record can attract investor capital |
Automation policies and API availability change — always confirm current terms on a firm's rules page before connecting a bot.
FAQ
Can I connect an AI agent directly to my WICK account? Yes, via the native one-click MCP connection — Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor are supported through OAuth.
Do I need to write custom code to use WICK's API? Not for the MCP path. For the REST API, yes — it's a standard documented API you integrate against using the OpenAPI 3.1 spec.
Is algorithmic trading allowed on a WICK funded account? Yes, personal automation is explicitly allowed across all tracks.
Does automated trading get different risk rules than manual trading? No — the same drawdown and consistency rules apply regardless of how the trade was placed.
Is there a cost to use the API or MCP connection? No separate cost — it's included with any WICK FUNDED challenge or funded account.
Simulated trading evaluation — no real funds are traded. Not financial advice.
