Running an AI Trading Agent on a Funded Account

What a real AI agent needs from a prop firm beyond EA support, and how WICK FUNDED's REST API and MCP connection make it possible.

An "AI trading agent" and a "trading bot" sound similar but aren't quite the same thing. A bot usually runs a fixed script — if X, then Y — with no real reasoning. An agent, in the current sense of the word, can read context, weigh a decision, and act through tools it's been given. The question that actually matters for a funded account is: which prop firms give an agent anything real to act on?

Why most funded accounts can't host an AI agent

Running an agent against a funded account requires three things most prop firms simply don't offer:

  1. A way to read account state — balance, open positions, drawdown remaining — without logging into a web dashboard manually.
  2. A way to act — place, modify, or close orders — through a documented interface, not by automating clicks on a GUI.
  3. A standard connection protocol an AI assistant already knows how to speak, rather than a custom integration you have to build and maintain yourself.

MetaTrader-based firms technically support automation through Expert Advisors, but an EA isn't an AI agent — it's a script running inside the MetaTrader terminal, and wiring an actual LLM-based agent (Claude, GPT) to it means building and hosting a bridge yourself. Firms with no public API at all rule out agent access entirely unless you're willing to scrape a web interface, which is fragile and usually against the terms.

What to look for if you want an agent trading your funded account

  • A public, documented REST API — ideally OpenAPI-spec'd, so you know exactly what's available without reverse-engineering anything.
  • A native MCP (Model Context Protocol) connection — this is the part that actually makes "AI agent" meaningful rather than aspirational. MCP lets Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor call tools on the account directly, with your OAuth authorization, no custom bridge required.
  • Granular tools, not just "place an order" — account state, position history, a trading journal, consistency metrics, and candle/price data, so the agent can actually reason about risk rather than trading blind.
  • Explicit permission for personal automation in the firm's terms, so you're not operating in a grey area.

How this looks on WICK FUNDED

WICK FUNDED exposes a public REST API (OpenAPI 3.1) and a one-click MCP server — connect Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor via OAuth and the agent gets tools for account state, open and pending positions, the trading journal, consistency metrics, symbols, candles, and full order management (open, close, modify, cancel). This is the full set an agent needs to reason about a position and act on it inside your account's actual risk rules — not a stripped-down demo API.

The account itself: challenges start from $49 (10K 2-Step), accounts range from $10K to $200K, there's no time limit to hit the target, and the profit split ladders from 80% up to 95%. Payouts are in USDC on Solana, bi-weekly. Checkout accepts card (via Banxa) or USDC/SOL — no crypto wallet required for card. All trading is simulated; no real funds are exposed to the market.

Supervise the agent — this isn't optional

An AI agent with trading tools will act on whatever instructions and data it's given, including bad ones. It can misread a signal, overtrade, or push right up against a drawdown limit without the self-preservation instinct a human trader has. Start with the agent proposing trades for your confirmation rather than acting unattended, check its reasoning against the account's actual rules, and don't assume "AI" means "safer" — it means faster, which cuts both ways. FAQ

What's the difference between an AI agent and an EA/trading bot? An EA runs a fixed script inside MetaTrader with no real reasoning. An AI agent uses a language model to interpret context and decide, then acts through tools — which requires an API or MCP connection the model can actually call.

Does connecting an agent cost extra? No — the MCP connection and REST API are included with any WICK FUNDED account; there's no separate fee for AI access.

Can the agent lose the challenge for me? Yes, in the same way a human trader can — if it breaches the daily or max drawdown rule, the evaluation or funded account fails under the same terms that apply to manual trading.

Is this real money? No. Every WICK FUNDED account is a simulated evaluation; no real funds are traded, and payouts come from company funds on simulated performance.

Do I need to know how to code to set this up? No — the MCP connection is a one-click OAuth authorization inside Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor. Coding is only needed if you want to go beyond that and build something custom against the REST API.
